Fix your Wordpress CSS for Text Wrapping

You need to add this snippet to your CSS stylesheet to have word wrapping work correctly on your images, this saves me a ton of time as now I do not have to double edit my images as I post.  With this change along with the new stuff coming in 2.7 I can finally use Wordpresses interface to post!

img.alignleft, div.alignleft {
float:left;
margin:0 0.5em 0.5em 0;
}
img.alignright, div.alignright {
float:right;
margin:0 0 0.5em 0.5em;
}
img.aligncenter, div.aligncenter {
text-align:center;
margin:0 auto;
}

Thanksgiving 2008

Here are some pictures from our Thanksgiving Day festivities we had at our house.  We needed a way to break in our new dining room table so we figured we would do it by hosting Thanksgiving.  We are still missing out on the chairs but those will come probably after the wedding.

We deep fried the turkey as it is my preferred method of cooking.  It turned out perfect and of course made a nice big mess in the backyard but its all good.  After dinner we decided to play some Mortal Kombat and Rock Band which was highly entertaining watching Laura’s grandparents play.  I think Jack hit 3 notes on the drums at the right time but dammit he had a whole lot of fun doing it!

.htaccess 301 Redirect Code

Looks like I keep forgetting to post the code for this so this is how you will do a 301 .htaccess redirect

Redirect 301 /index.html http://www.danieltmurphy.com/blog/welcome-to-my-site/

You must redirect from a specific location to a specific location.  In this case my index.html file is totally blank but it does exist

Compfight - Search Flickr

I was reading my blogs this morning and came across this one today.  This is a great site and oddly enough exactly what I have been looking for.  I have been trying to find some fun and interesting backgrounds for my PS3 and I have been searching Flickr through its regular search and have had modest results.  The issue was more about the layout of the results than anything wasn’t really conducive of looking at tons of pictures.  This site does just that, it gives you thumbnails and as you roll over images tells you the resolution of the pictures so you can quickly decide if it will work as a background.  This also works with the creative common licenses to save you a trip to court which is always a good thing!  This site will save a ton of time and bring up tons of new pictures for me.  I am assuming the reason that it is so slow is because it’s making its way around the blogosphere and getting hit pretty hard right now.  A great find!

Bullzip - PDF Writer

Sometimes you just need a quick and dirty way to convert a document into a PDF quickly and effectively.  I used to us PDFCreator a lot but have run into a few issues installing on my work laptop as well as running with Vista.  It seems that this software called Bullzip works the exact same way with the exact same result without any issues.

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

I was really excited to see a new version of Mortal Kombat come out for the PS3 as that is one of my all time favorite games to play.  Great part about this game is no skill is required and everyone can play without it being too difficult.  Combinations are greatly simplified in this version compared to that of the last version as there is no more idea of ‘fighting styles’  The DC comic characters are a nice addition to the game as they add in some new moves and some pretty entertaining animation.  As expected the joker seems to have the best tricks and the best combinations.

One thing that was kind of new in this version was the story mode.  I managed to play though this and as the reviews say about 3-4 hours later I was done.  Basically you choose a side (MK or DC) and then you fight against everyone else.  As the levels change you rotate through characters and get a very good feel for all of the characters actions.  The only thing I didn’t like is there is no way to save your progress basically its an all or nothing shot.  But that’s alright as I did not buy this for the storyline mode I bought it just for 2 player Kombat.  I we saw with Laura’s parents this past weekend anyone can take the controller and beat the crap out of anyone else occasionally throwing a bomb or doing a special move which they have no idea how they did but loved it.

This is one that I am glad I bought and will get played a lot as it never really gets old.  I am still trying to track down a site that lists the fatalities but because the game is still so new I haven’t had any luck finding anything yet.

Google Calendar Sync

With Plaxo’s inability to really be reliable these days for calendar syncing I have decided to start using Google’s Calendar Sync.  You can set the intervals to sync your mail and runs without any issues.  Then I also have Plaxo pick up my iCal settings from Gmail and sync again.  It is just nice to have my calendar in multiple places in case I need access to it from different locations.

System Defrag JKDefrag

So this is a nice little defrag program that is a little better than the default one that comes with Windows.  I have looked at this software before and it was a little too complex for me.  Looks like the simplified the interface and made it so you can just run the defaults or you can change all the options.  When I just run the default file it loads immediately and starts running.  I have noticed a big difference after using this application to speed up my computer.
