OLED TV’s hit 27′ at CES

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

imageLooks like they managed to stretch the OLED TV’s to 27 inches at CES 2008, it will be interesting to see if this technology takes off.  One thing that is amazing about these TV’s are their super slim profiles along with their amazing contrast ratios of 1,000,000:1.  Just like its 11 inch mother this toy is from Sony and will cost $2,500 with a resolution of 1920 X 1080 (1080p)

The thickness of the TV is equal to three credit cards stacked! amazing!

LaserTV’s next big thing?

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

image With 2008 CES just finishing in the past week I am now going through all my stared items and adding them to my blog.  One thing I want to make sure I add to my blog is prices so I can laugh when I read this stuff later and new technology that might not make it.

It would seem that Mitsubishi has a big handhold over a new version of TV’s called Laser TV’s.  From the articles I read and what I found no one could really explain how these things work but the results that people saw at CES they said were amazing.  Estimated stats put the TV’s around $1,800 and say they have many of the benefits of plasmas but use half the energy.

Sony Tiny USB Flash Drive

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

image I saw one of these at Best Buy today and was amazed at the tiny size of this bad boy.  Its reasonably priced at $69 and caries 4GB, this image makes me laugh because the image is like 2 times the size of the actual product.  It comes with a nice little sleeve to carry around in with a clip to put it on your key chain.  I like the SanDisk that I posted before and that I currently have but I thought this one was worth noting.

AUD-AUX Audi Auxiliary Adapter

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

imageThis would make a good gift idea for those of us who have to keep their Audi for another few years until they graduate.  This little guy plugs into the CD changer adapter in the trunk of the car and gives you 2 (left & right) RCA jacks to plugin anything you want.  So from there you can get a stereo to headphone adapter and plug it directly into your headphone jack and now you are directly connected to your stereo without any tape adapters or bad FM modulators.  This would be a nice feature to add to my car…now I just need a spare $65 laying around.  Crutchfield has it as they typically have anything for your car stereo.

ATI shows new video card with DisplayPort

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

imageSo this would be the first siting of the new DisplayPort making its way to the video cards.  This goes inline with the Dell Monitor I posted with the new interface on it.  This new interface is great because it allows you to daisy-chain multiple monitors on just one port.  No more having to have multiple cards to have multiple screens.  Plus what good is your computer these days unless you have multiple monitors?

Tivo Releases More Music Channels for Free

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

image Ahh yes finally some variety.  This is a nice added bonus to Tivo’s features.  Looks like now they have Music Choice which is the same service that provides digital cable people with music.  We have been using Live365 or Galleon and connecting to a Shoutcast to get music on the Tivo but this will add some much welcome channels.  I am a big fan of listening to music from Tivo while cleaning the house or attempting to finish my next paper for school.  This is available as long as you have a broadband connection running to your Tivo which just about everyone has these days.  It looks like this service also includes music videos as well as just music.

Touchscreen 2.5" disk enclosure secures data

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

image This is a great convergence of two common technologies.  This adds an extra security line to your portable hard drive.  The only issue is the site is in Japanese and I cannot read it so I have no idea what kind of encryption if any it adds to the data.  Because if it doesn’t add encryption to the drive what is keeping you from opening the drive and plugging into another external enclosure.  Considering the lack of any translation site I am not thinking that it is not as cool of a product as it sounds, but it does make for an interesting idea.

5 port USB, SATA, eSATA

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

imageAh yes convergence at its finest.  You can never have enough USB ports and this adds the nice functionality of eSATA and SATA plugs which are great seeing as how there are a lot of new enclosures with ports on them and it is also a lot faster then USB.  $43 for the powered version which is a must as just about all peripherals need power from USB.  Personally I am excited to see USB 3.0 come to the market!

Fire-Safe Waterproof Hard Drive

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

image This little hard drive enclosure makes sure that your data survives any flood or fire that might happen to you.  Personally I back up on my webserver as I have 350GB to fill there and I also hold some external backups.  I am not so sure that any of my personal data is worth this much security, but if I ran my own company and all my data was on a single drive and I didn’t have a disaster recovery system.  $320 for 160GB sealed hard drive so there is no swapping of the drives for a bigger one

Display port makes it way to a monitor

Posted by: Dan | Posted in: Gadgets

imageIt is nice to see the new standard that was adopted a while ago to replace the new defunct DVI port and the dated VGA port.  The port is labeled with the number 7 and looks very similar to an HDMI port.  Looks like I have a new requirement for my plasma TV is that it has a display port.  Of course that means they need to make graphic cards that have this as an optional output in the first place.  Nothing like technology confusing the public as to how to connect their monitor.
